WELCOME aboard - Explorer Ventures is excited to announce the addition of two new captains aboard the Caribbean Explorer I and Turks & Caicos Explorer II.
Lowel O'Rourke comes to Explorer Ventures from Santa Barbara, California. While in California Lowel taught both martial arts and diving, and was a child care director. He spent some time in the Cayman Islands as a liveaboard deck hand before joining the Caribbean Explorer I in 2007. Lowel's goal has always been to be a boat captain. One of his comments was "what could be better than to be a captain and get a chance to dive every day?" He loves being able to introduce people to great diving sites, to meet people from different countries and learn about them. Explorer Ventures is excited about having Lowel as our captain aboard the Caribbean Explorer I.
Mark Fernandez became captain of the Turks & Caicos Explorer II recently and brings a wealth of experience to Explorer Ventures. Mark most currently was the captain aboard a corporate yacht based out of Alaska. He has been ‘sailing for thirty years, experiencing everything from inter-island sailing charters to supervising a ship restoration project as well as a contract captain to the department of defense. Marks interests have focused on the water but he also was president and co-founder of an international engineering company.
We are very excited about the skills, experience and enthusiasm Mark and Lowel bring to our fleet. We know you will also enjoy them, the diving enthusiasm and quality of service these two new captains will provide you while aboard.
An amazing dive trip at an amazing price - Explorer Ventures' Caribbean Explorer I is our most beloved vessel and the price is amazing without any sacrifice of dive quality or amenities. The Caribbean Explorer I has been the cornerstone of Explorer Ventures for 20 years and is still a much sought after vessel in a beautiful and varied destination. The southern Bahamas itinerary is unlike most Bahamas diving experience, and offers diving at remote and rarely-visited sites. Wall dives, swim-throughs, sharks of all kinds, large coral and sponge formations, eagle rays and small creatures too numerous to mention are the normal weekly sightings. So come join us in the Bahamian Out Islands for a great week of diving and camaraderie! Call 1.800.322.3577 or email info@explorerventures.com.
CONTEST- Explorer Ventures announces “Ventures into the Reef,” a series of competitions in recognition of “International Year of the Reef (IYOR 2008).” We are inviting people to share their underwater adventures in celebration of the beauty and excitement that coral reefs provide to us. There are three categories in which people can participate: best underwater photo, best topside photo and best trip commentary. Find out how to participate and win a $500 credit toward your next trip with us and more! >>
Fuel Surcharge Increase - As you've seen at your local fuel station, the recent run-up in world oil prices has greatly fuel costs, especially the diesel fuel which powers our fleet vessels. We've therefore been forced to increase our fuel surcharge to US$160 on all of our Caribbean and Galapagos vessels, for all departures on or after June 1, 2008. A letter from the president about the increase. >>
Official ScubaRadio Liveaboard Company! - We are very excited to announce that we are now the Official ScubaRadio liveaboard company! We look forward to bringing you news from our fleet via the "World's First Radio Show Devoted to Diving." So, be sure to listen in and see what's happening! ScubaRadio will be aboard the Caribbean Explorer I in May so listen for a first hand account of our Caribbean Explorer I trip.

NEWS

Caribbean Explorer I clean up.
Earth Day celebration - April 22, 2008 marked the 37th Earth Day celebration. Explorer Ventures' office employees, as well as staff and passengers aboard our vessels during the week did a variety of things to celebrate Earth Day.
On the Great Barrier Reef, Nimrod Explorer participated in the Project AWARE Dive for Earth Day. Customers aboard for the April 26th Cod Hole/Ribbon Reefs Expedition helped with Project AWARE’s Asia Pacific Fish Survey at Steve’s Bommie.
Nimrod Explorer passengers and dive staff identified and recorded all sightings of ten pre-determined fish species including big-eye trevally, lionfish, leaf scorpion fish, white-tip reef sharks, and yellow-fin goat fish among others. The species are chosen because they are recognized as indicator species, whose relative numbers nearly always indicate the health of an ecosystem.
All guests aboard Nimrod Explorer received Project Aware certificates and decals in recognition of their involvement. The surveys were forwarded to Project AWARE for inclusion within their database.

Earth Hour - Here are a few excerpts of how Explorer Ventures celebrated Earth Hour on March 29th.
Caribbean Explorer I was at the dock in Georgetown, Bahamas for Earth Hour. The generator was turned off and everyone sat on the sundeck talking while Geoff played his guitar. Several other boats in the marina also turned off their lights.
Woody and Pat Wood, the intrepid campers, spent the entire weekend enjoying the beautiful outdoors. More about our Earth Hour participation. >>
