The Galapagos’ northern islands of Darwin and Wolf offer world-class diving 365 days a year, with some of the best high-voltage diving in the world.  The huge schools of scalloped hammerhead sharks, jacks and tuna can be seen year-round, with the numbers remaining fairly constant all year. The Humboldt Current brings in colder water to this equatorial area and creates great diversity in life on land and in the sea. No matter what time of year, this is adrenaline diving at its best - time to put the wide angle lens on and load in a new memory card!

Though whale sharks can be seen in many parts of the world – often in warmer water, less challenging conditions and with greater regularity than in the Galapagos - what really differentiates the diving in Darwin and Wolf and makes them one of the top diving locations in the world is the scalloped hammerhead shark. Seeing these large fish in schools from ten to hundreds at one time is common year-round.  On a given dive you may see a wall of sharks in front of you, while other times they are surrounding you. The adrenalin rush is unbelievable when you descend the first time and start to see these beautiful creatures. Clinging onto the rocks, you will witness a parade-like spectacle that can only be compared to a Cirque de Soleil show – action on all sides that will take your breath away!

There are two seasons in Galapagos; both feature diving at a level second to none.  From June to December, seas are on average rougher and the water temperature colder, but there’s a higher probability of seeing whale sharks – there’s nearly a 100% chance of seeing schooling hammerheads.  In the peak of high season, whale sharks sightings are very common at Darwin.  From January through June, the marine life is just as abundant as during the high season, but seas are on average calmer and water temperatures warmer.  Whale sharks are  only occasionally seen, but you’ll still stand a nearly 100% chance of experiencing the schooling scalloped hammerheads.  Low season is generally a better choice for those that like calmer seas, generally better visibility and warmer water and air temperatures.

The Humboldt Explorer began weekly service in the Galapagos Islands in early July,  has met and exceeded guests’ expectations above the water and under the water. Guests have been delighted with the beautiful accommodations aboard, the personal care provided by the crew, the delicious meals and especially the way in which the dive deck has been laid out to easily accommodate all diving needs. Several guests have made a point of stating ‘… great crew, great diving, can’t wait to return ...’  During the past several weeks, while diving areas guests have sighted hundreds of hammerheads and turtles, many many whale sharks, silky sharks, eagle rays, Galapagos sharks and more.

The new custom-built vessel is the first of her kind. She is a 106 foot, 2 level steel monohull vessel, built for speed and stability on the long crossings to Darwin and Wolf, and features raised lower staterooms to allow an expansive outside view from every room.  The vessel offers 6 lower and 2 upper staterooms, each with private baths, full-size twin beds that can convert to queen beds and large windows. A teak sundeck features open and covered areas, a Jacuzzi, wet bar, BBQ grill and ample seating for all; the indoor dining and lounge area comfortably seats all guests as well.   A large dive deck with camera rinse tank, large camera table, wetsuit drying area and hot showers accommodates 16 divers with ease.
