Not your "Been there dived that" kind of Bahamas trip.

In April 2005, the Caribbean Explorer I began offering weekly liveaboard diving excursions from the southern Bahamas. On October 18, 2008 after 21 years of faithful service to Explorer Ventures the beloved Caribbean Explorer I ran her last trip in the Bahamas. But all is not lost for those who wish experience the big-animal action, pristine walls and reefs found in the Southern Bahamas. Beginning March 21, 2009 through July 25, 2009, the Caribbean Explorer II, will carry our guests to these great dive sites. The schedule will including San Salvador, Rum Cay, Conception Island, Cat Island, and Long Island. Scheduling 5 dives daily, including night dives, the vessel will offer 5 1/2 days of diving each week (depending on the week and weather).

Great Exuma is a beautiful, untouched Out Island. The tiny capital, George Town, is located next to picturesque Elizabeth Harbour. The local straw market, where one can view Bahamian women and their traditional straw craftwork is worth a visit to see an aspect of the unique local culture. If it is relaxation that one is seeking, this island is well worth staying on for a few days. Nightlife is limited in George Town, or one can find total relaxation just a few minutes outside the capital.

The Bahamas encompass more than 700 islands, many of them uninhabited, and span more than 1,000 square miles of ocean. With a maximum elevation of 206 feet, the islands nonetheless vary widely in history, atmosphere, and diving. When Christopher Columbus made his first landfall in the hemisphere on either San Salvador or Cat Island (depending on who you talk to), the 500-year residency of the peaceful Lucayan Indians quickly came to an end; since then, the Islands' proximity to Florida has caught the fancy of explorers, settlers, pirates, and traders alike.

The Bahamian Dollar (equivalent to the US Dollar) is the official currency of the Bahamas; both US and Bahamian dollars are accepted interchangeably throughout the islands. Power outlets and 115-volt power are the same as in the USA. Passports are required of all U.S. visitors; an ongoing or return ticket is also required.
